A home from home

Short breaks

Whether it’s a pre-planned holiday, a weekend away or an emergency hospital visit, it’s hard to predict what’s around the corner in life. Our two ‘short break’ homes have got over 25 years’ experience providing a ‘home from home’ respite service for families supporting someone with a learning disability.

This service is available to book in advance, or for use in emergencies when things haven’t gone to plan.

Stibbs House in St George, Bristol and Fairburn in Little Stoke, South Gloucestershire provide support away from home for visits between one night and one month.

We understand it’s important for some people to continue with their daily routine during their stay, while others want to have a complete break. We’re also aware of how important choice and control are for those staying with us. With this in mind, we’ll always consult with guests to establish what they want to do. This can include trips to the shops, the pub, shows, the cinema, the park, and the zoo, as well as various in-house activities.

People look forward to coming. We see the smiles on their faces when they arrive for their stay, and they say “I’m on holiday!” which is so nice to hear. It means we’re doing a good job.

Support worker

Providing short breaks for hundreds of people has taught us that as well as a range of activities, peace and quiet and time to relax are equally important. The sensory room at Stibbs House and the sensory swing at Fairburn ensure a holistic approach to the wellbeing of everyone staying with us. Both homes also have well-kept gardens for guests to relax in.
