Cooking up a future

Nick's story

“I really enjoy going, it’s so peaceful to be cooking again. The people are all lovely, and there are even a few people I know who goes, so it’s nice to have a catch up as well. I have found my confidence.”

Nick

Nick has been supported by Milestones Trust for a couple of years now and enjoys getting involved with our community projects. More recently though, he’s joined the Square Food Foundation’s 12-week cooking programme and has plans of cooking up a future! Before joining Milestones Nick worked as a professional chef alongside his father at a Greek restaurant in Bristol, so the programme spoke to him on a personal level – he really wanted to take part and re-hone his skills to get back in the kitchen. Currently on week four of a 12-week programme, Nick has learnt new recipes, skills, and cooking tips, but most importantly he’s regaining the confidence he needs to get back to cooking food for himself and others.

The Square Food Foundation is a charity that offers a safe, welcoming environment in which people can develop vital life skills to make healthier choices which impacts their physical health and mental wellbeing. They have been teaching people of all ages and abilities how to cook for 25 years with the aim of reducing hunger, improving health, and bringing people together. Check out their website to learn more, get involved and find recipes and resources.

From beanburgers to leek, pea, and watercress soup, Nick has found his passion again and is cooking up a storm! Since going to the Square Food Foundation, he now cooks three times a week and all the people supported at his service love it! From omelettes to pork chops, spaghetti bolognese and roast lamb, Nick is loving his newfound confidence and is back cooking once again.

He recently made one of his favourite Greek puddings called Halva for Coronation Road and it “went down like a treat, we all loved it” said Jess, his support worker.

Nicks is cooking up a future, his goal is to get a job as a professional chef again and move back into independent living. He is looking forward to completing the Square Food Foundation programme and is positive about the direction he is moving in.
