Right on cue…
Elvis's story
His staff are committed to supporting Elvis to pursue his hobbies and aspirations.
Elvis lives in North Bristol at one of our supported living services for people with learning disabilities. He is a very active person and enjoys playing sport.
One sport that Elvis particularly enjoys is snooker, which he has played since he was a young man. Recently, he has played snooker regularly at a club in Southmead. Cue Zone is specifically for adults with learning disabilities. It offers coaching, and friendly competitions are held between members of the club. Elvis finds snooker relaxing, and he enjoys socialising at the club.
Over one hot weekend in August, World Disability Billiards and Snooker held their Welsh Open competition. It involved players from all over the world, and Elvis was among them. He took a coach to the venue in Cwmbran, accompanied by one of his support workers and some of his friends from the Cue Zone club.
Elvis played in three matches at the competition. One match ended with a thrilling black ball game to finish, with Elvis coping well with the extreme heat. He is already looking forward to next year’s competition.
Francesca, the Service Coordinator at Elvis’s supported living service, was thrilled that Elvis was able to take part in the competition. She was full of praise for the staff who supported him to do this. She said: “None of this would have been possible without Szilvia and David. They’ve shown real commitment to supporting Elvis to pursue his hobbies and aspirations.”
Snooker is not the only activity that brings out Elvis’s competitive side. He also enjoys playing pool at a local pub, and he regularly beats his support staff at chess.
His staff team report that Elvis has grown in confidence significantly in the last year, and he is comfortable getting on public transport and exploring places outside of his local area. Elvis is also much more confident going out by himself. He enjoys going to local cafes with his housemate Graham and attending a local church group every Sunday.
