Support worker named runner-up for ‘Unsung Hero’ prize
Judy Shire, a Support Worker at Vassall Road service for people with learning disabilities, has been handed a runner-up prize in The Carer’s Unsung Hero awards. The Unsung Hero awards recognise social care staff who go above and beyond their normal duties.
Judy was nominated for the award by Vassall Road’s Service Coordinator Jessica Sutton. Jessica said:
“Where to start with Judy? She’s always on the lookout for things we can do as a team to improve the service. She will often ring before her shift to run through some ideas on what she plans to do and to ensure we have all the resources before she arrives. Recently, she organised a strawberry picking day and a big BBQ, and she was the driving force behind renovating people we support’s rooms and updating their wardrobes. She also makes the best meals and desserts, which the people we support love.
Judy is also fantastic at supporting the rest of the team and management. She takes on extra jobs such as archiving, extra cleaning and inducting new starters, and she will always pick up shifts when needed, even if they’re last minute.
She really is an inspiration and a hardworking, dedicated member of staff. She does all this without asking for anything in return and, given that she’s 71 years old, it proves that age is no barrier (she’ll kill me for saying that, but I think it’s worth a mention!).”
Outside of work, Judy runs support groups helping homeless people and victims of abuse.
For winning the runner-up prize, Judy received a £25 Marks & Spencer gift voucher. Judy said:
“I was overwhelmed by the nomination. It made me feel that I am doing my job well. It was a great feeling to feel cared for and appreciated. Even if I’m not working, I like to feed the world and give love to people who need it. I am always happy to support my team and the people we support as I do this not for money but for love of the job.”
