Cycle Challenge raises £3,000 for Warmley Wheelers
Participants in a Cycle Challenge have raised more than £3,000 for Warmley Wheelers, our cycling project for people with health conditions and supported needs. The money raised, which included more than £2,000 in online donations, will go towards the running costs of the project and maintenance of the fleet of adapted bicycles.
The Cycle Challenge event, which was organised by Warmley Wheelers, invited people to take on a cycling-related challenge of their own choosing to be completed during the month of July. Participants were also encouraged to enlist sponsors in support of their challenge to raise money for Warmley Wheelers.
On Thursday 19th August, participants were invited to a special event to celebrate their achievements. They were each presented with a commemorative medal by the Trust’s Chief Executive Hilary Crowhurst, who gave an address thanking them for their efforts.
Participants took on a range of challenges. Judith Pope cycled 1,000miles in a month, Susan Hammond learned to ride a unicycle, while Joni Pike, who has cerebral palsy, cycled 40miles using a hand bike hired from Warmley Wheelers.
Judith, who has a son with special needs, said:
“For people with disabilities who live locally, Warmley Wheelers is really important. It can help to make them feel independent and to give them that same level of joy that I get on a bicycle.”
Joni said:
“I wanted to give back to Warmley Wheelers as they have helped me so much this past year. Cycling helped me to go out more than staying at home. I love seeing different kinds of nature while out cycling and cycling’s positive for mental health as well.”
If you’d like to give money to the Warmley Wheelers Cycle Challenge, there’s still time. Donate here. We’ll also be running the Cycle Challenge again next year, so watch this space.
