Our aim is to empower and engage the people we support in all aspects of their lives. This is why we invest in assistive technology. Defined as “device, software, or equipment that helps people work around their challenges”, we see it as something that makes life easier and more fun, and that ultimately gives people greater independence. From a simple device that helps a person turn a key in their door to a robot that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, we are passionate about showing people that technology is something to be embraced, not feared.
Making everyday life smarter and easier
Assistive Technology
Assistive technology doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, we’ve found that the best products are the ones that are ‘off-the-shelf’, like Amazon’s Alexa or the Breville Hot Cup. These products have been designed for use by everyone, regardless of ability so are truly inclusive. These are products that perhaps you wouldn’t think of when asked to describe assistive technology, but they have real, practical applications. We have around 30 Alexa devices installed across our services so far that have proved to be invaluable to the people we support.
But we haven’t stopped with just the ‘off-the-shelf’ products. One of our values is to be courageous in our approach, which means embracing challenges head on and trying new things. That’s why we have partnered with organisations who are at the forefront of innovative technology, like Robotics For Good CIC, to see how we can bring super smart tech to the people we support in a useable and relevant way. In fact, in May 2021 we will be welcoming the OhmniLabs Telepresence Robot to a few of our services in a bid to understand how this technology can add value to people’s every day lives. We’re very excited about being a part of this innovative pilot project.
